Summer is…

Hanging out at the lake

Feeding Ducks (and by that I also mean cleaning out the fridge and throwing HUGE chunks of bread to the ducks.  But even here I can see abi’s sweet compassionate spirit…she always tries to throw to the duck who is off on his/her own)

Lessons in being hot

Seriously, at times I feel like this blog is a constant catch-up in a race to document life…BUT, in continuing towards that goal…a few weeks ago our a/c went out.  This is NOT enjoyable in Texas.  Especially this summer.  My goodness, it has been H.O.T. this year.  Hitting triple digits before the first official day of summer (Michigan – you win here).

We did lots of this: (b/c at night it was still cooler outside than inside our house!)

And then (we waited a few days after our first a/c guy came out – fixed it for 24 hours – then told us a RIDICULOUS amount that he would charge us to really fix it) well, my hubby fixed it.  This man – he is too good.

So our lesson.  Wow, do I take things for granted.  My heart ached for the sweet elderly of our community who you know endure the summers each and every year, I felt convicted of my constant expectancy of “77 degrees” while so many in our city, country, and world endure exhausting temperatures with no repair man or repair hubby in sight.  This little hot house of ours offered refreshing clarity.

Beans, Beans

FIRST HARVEST!!

IMG_4495

We are so excited.  They were tasty!  As of right now that’s all we’re getting – come on cucumbers and squash!  And dang those bunnies for eating my lettuce.  Maybe some bunny stew…

Memorial Day 2010

Well, it’s better late than never.  2 weeks too late…

Menu – Falafel (our a/c went out that weekend – so we decided that middle eastern fare would be appropriate), tahini sauce, sweet potato fries (a recent Wallace addiction), watermelon, mangos, and red velvet cupcakes (I was graciously given a cupcake stand for my birthday, was anxious to try them out…and didn’t have them cooled in enough time to frost.  BOO!)  And Donald’s parents to join!

Fireworks at Flag Pole Hill.  We love this tradition – I am always thankful for where we live (both in the Memorial Day sense and the Dallas location sense) when I am sitting on the hill, listening to the DSO, and watching fireworks.  It is a sweet evening.

Jambalaya: Morning Edition

Earlier in the week, I awoke early and had a delightful morning.  Please let me explain.

The morning didn’t go exactly as I had planned.  I had Beth Moore’s ‘Esther’ on my mind – not jambalaya.  BUT, I then remembered that I had some produce that wouldn’t be quite so tasty if I didn’t go ahead and get my jambalaya on.  Thus my Thursday morning took a different turn.

First Stop:

(To keep this blog rooted in reality, my cup of coffee was from the day before.  But it still tasted deliciously good.)

Next: Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma, ahhh, I could start any day like this with delight.

And then began my first time to make jambalaya (motivated by some good sales at Whole Foods and some leftover sausage!)

Verdict is that I added too much Tobasco – but overall, it is a keeper!

What I wish was my backyard…

While Abi and I were up in Michigan we spent one of our weekends up at my Uncle’s on the lake.  This is a good place to be.  Might I just be able to transport this spot down into our little abode in dallas?  Pretty please?  Life is more simple.  Life is slower.  It is a good place to be.  Souls find rest.  Cats & dogs find mass amounts of enjoyment.  I found myself day dreaming a lot.  And day dreaming is a really good practice.
